This charming stabile depicts a black elephant raising his trunk into the air. The mobile extends from the tip of his trunk as he balances a blue moon and yellow star on one end and a spiraling red sun on the other. True to its nature, this mobile spins, rotating from the elephant's trunk and adding an interactive, animated element to this piece. Calder adds tiny details to this work that contribute to its whimsical, playful nature. The tips of the elephant's tusks, tail, and feet are bronze and shimmer when captured by light, while the points of the elephant's tusk and tail, created through the arched curve of the elephant's back, mimic the sharp points of the extended shapes of the sun, moon, and star. This work, which relays a sense of childlike fun and fancy, ties in with Calder's fascination for and love with the circus.
