ALEJANDRO SANTIAGO: 1964-2013
October 4 - November 30, 2013

A one-man exhibition dedicated to the memory of Oaxacan painter and sculptor Alejandro Santiago who passed away this year at the age of 49... His best known work was "2,501 Migrants", which opened in 2007 in his picturesque home town of Teococuilco, in southern Oaxaca state. Financed with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, it was an ambitious work to create an army of life-size clay figures to replace departed townspeople. Santiago said the inspiration for the project came in 2001, when he returned home after a three-year stay in Paris and was struck by Teococuilco's empty streets... The artist is in private and public collections worldwide - his drawings, sculptures and paintings will be the subject of a solo retrospective at Mexico City's El Museo Tamayo in 2014.
